HOW DID SCORE HELP THE CLIENT?
Jenna has been a client of SCORE since 2015. SCORE has assisted with financials, lease negotiations, strategy, pricing, expansion plans, productivity, etc. With the help of her mentors, Jenna has been able to take many ‘next steps’ to move from being a simply local brand to a now regional and soon to be a national option.
More than anything, with the help of her mentors, Jenna has been able to avoid many missteps that befall small businesses looking to break the barriers to entry.
WHAT HAS CLIENT ACHIEVED TO DESERVE THIS AWARD?
Despite the pressure (allure) to do the same as everyone else (e.g., “work on the Hill”, consulting, law, PR, etc.) Jenna bucked the trend and took the path less traveled.
Without a ‘safety-net’ she built her business from the ground up without outside funding. She’s done it ALL - whether mixing the dough, baking the cookies, loading the delivery vans, hitting the road, working farmers markets (be it 110 degrees or 10 below zero), making sales calls, hiring (and firing), doing the books, handling licensing/permitting,
attending equipment auctions, haggling with purveyors, negotiating with national accounts, and on and on.
From those humble beginnings, Jenna now has a crew of 15 employees and another 8 farmers market staffers. PLUS, plans for MORE (think: a much larger production facility and national accounts/distribution)!
Today, Whisked! is recognized as THE LOCAL DC treat - having been voted best bakery in various Washington Post Express and Washington City Paper ‘best of’ readers polls. Jenna is frequently approached for interviews regarding her experience as a successful business owner.
