  • Competitive Edge Sports Performance Program empowers youth athletes with training sessions, clinics and camps. Owner Monte Evans was inspired to start the business after spending time at the Junior Olympics, where he saw hundreds of youths passionate about training and participating in sports. Evans says his SCORE mentor helped him brainstorm off-hours programming ideas, and he now looks forward to adding programs for adult athletes. Other SCORE resources, like recorded webinars, helped Evans better navigate common challenges his small business was experiencing, like revenue streams and health savings accounts.
  • In 1996, single parent Gina Grillo started a small business to support her two daughters. Ten years later, she was forced to put her business aside when she contracted Lyme disease. After surviving the struggle, Grillo developed Grillo’s Essential Insect Repellant, inspiring a rebrand of her business in 2015 and a desire to help others prevent the disease she had experienced. She credits her SCORE mentor and SCORE resources with helping boost Grillo Essentials’ sales 295 percent from April to July 2016. Grillo relied on SCORE for guidance with a range of issues, including growth management, local networking and social media strategies.
  • U.S. Air Force veteran Gary Peterson launched One Community Auto to help nonprofits raise money through vehicle donations. The business re-envisions the donation model by accepting and then refurbishing the vehicles. One Community Auto sells the refreshed vehicles to retail customers, creating a higher donation value for the recipient nonprofit. To learn how to turn his idea into a business, Peterson attended a number of SCORE chapter workshops and webinars designed for startups, nonprofits and veterans. Peterson also sought the support of a SCORE mentor, who helped validate and provided strategic direction for the vision that became a thriving business.
