His other research and development accomplishments were in energy systems, computational methods, wire ropes, and biometrics. He has four patents in engineering and computing. Since his retirement from ARL, Som has been running his own consulting business in technology and management with a focus on concept generation. His current interests span engineering, technology, economic and social development. Som Karamchetty obtained M. Tech. and PhD degrees in engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, in 1962 and1965 respectively. He was on the faculty of IIT in India for ten years, and the University of Newcastle, Australia for nine years. Mr. Rapoport has over 30 years of progressively responsible experience (engineer to project manager to CEO) in Foundation Engineering, Project Management, and Field Work Logistics (worldwide equipment deployment, drilling, testing, surveys), as well as Business Development, Equipment Development, and Mergers & Acquisitions. He has personally worked on projects in more than 40 countries. In 1988, Mr. Rapoport has founded Marsco, a geotechnical company, in Houston, Texas. Between 1988 and 2001 he grew Marsco from a sole proprietorship to a well known international company with offices in Houston and Singapore, with a client list including all major oil companies, many national oil companies, and construction, drilling and insurance companies, worldwide. During that period, Marsco has also patented, built and deployed several unique tools for deepwater exploration. After selling Marsco to Fugro Group in 2001, Mr. Rapoport served as a President of Fugro C.I.S. BV, until 2006. In that capacity, he was responsible for strategic planning, marketing, business development and acquisitions for Fugro Group in countries of Former Soviet Union. Mr. Rapoport has published numerous papers and presented numerous lectures on site assessment for offshore platforms and pipelines. As a recognized expert on the topic he serves as an expert witness in court. He also serves on two expert committees in International Standard Organization and on ASCE Committee on Marine Renewable Energy.
